🌸 How Big is My Plant Size When Shipped?
The plant size when shipped varies depending on the variety, but here’s some examples of what you can expect:
✔ Bijou Micro Mini’s™ – These tiny beauties are shipped around 6 inches+ tall, perfect for bonsai lovers or small-space gardeners.
✔ Standard Crape Myrtles – Ranging from 1-4 feet, depending on the variety. Some of our larger selections are trimmed down to 4 feet to fit shipping boxes efficiently.
✔ Nothing Over 4 Feet – Why? Because keeping plants under 4 feet means huge savings on shipping costs for our customers!
💡 Do Crape Myrtles get Root-Bound? Nope!
Unlike many other plants, crape myrtles don’t suffer from being "root bound." (Root Bound simple refers to a plant with lots of roots in the pot, that's all) It’s one of the many reasons they make excellent bonsai! All plants arrive in a 1.15-quart pot, and you can be sure it’s been grown with care and will flourish in your garden.

We never ship our crape myrtles bare-root—only in pots with healthy, well-established roots. This ensures your tree arrives strong, stress-free, and ready to grow the moment it reaches your doorstep. If we wouldn't buy it, we won't ship it to you!

Plant Size When Shipped
Plant size when shipped depends on a number of factors. Some plants need to be trimmed to 4ft tall to fit in our shipping boxes. While others, such as our Bijou™ Micro Mini's that only mature to 2-3ft tall will ship 6in tall.
Your Actual Plant Appearance
The actual appearance and size of the plant(s) you receive from us will be dependent on several factors:
- Varieties-If it's a Bijou Micro-Mini™ it will be 4in-1ft tall. If it's a fast Growing Standard, it may have to be trimmed to 4ft to fit in our shipping boxes.
- Pot Size-All plants are shipped in the SAME SIZE POT. They are 1.15quarts. They may have slightly different appearances given what's available in that exact size that year, but they will always have the same volume. ALL plants are shipped in pots with soil. WE NEVER SHIP BARE ROOT.
- Popularity-The most popular varieties are almost always the smallest. We sell varieties that cannot be found ANYWHERE else, and they are in high demand. Thus, some don't have long here at the nursery to gain considerable size.
- Time of Year-Crape Myrtles (with the exceptions of Floribunda and Speciosa), are deciduous hardwoods. So they will drop their leaves and go dormant for winter. You may receive a plant that's dormant with no leaves, one that's fully leafed out in spring, One that's flowering in summer or one that's turning fall colors and dropping leaves in autumn.
- Pruned vs. Not Pruned-Some plants need to be pruned shorter to fit in the boxes. This equates to lots of breaking where each cut was made. Some miniatures need to be pruned for width. This too will encourage branching. When you receive a pruned plant, Don't Panic! They will recover just fine.
- Leaves in the Bottom of the Box-This happens all the time, no matter if they were in the box for an hour or a week. Let's face facts: plants in general don't like to be put in a box and shipped across the country! The good news is that crape myrtles are EXCEPTIONALLY resilient and recover just fine.
- Leaf Discoloration-Again, plants just don't like being put in a box and shipped across the country. You may notice leaves that have changed colors (red, yellow, orange, etc), or have what looks likes spots (a lot of the time this is just soil and can be washed off). Don't panic! This phenomenon is especially common when shipping plants in summer when it's hot. Keep the soil moist and your new plants will drop their leaves, only to regrow perfect new ones in a couple weeks (almost always sooner).
- Broken Branches-This is fairly rare, given we prune the plants before they're shipped. But once again, plants don't like to be shipped! And sometimes shipping is a rough process. Although we do everything we can to protect your plants, a branch may break here and there. Don't Panic! The good news is that it will NOT harm your plants. Remove the broken branch with pruners, scissors, etc. The plant will regrow these branches and become even thicker and fuller than before.
These Pictures were taken in Spring when the plants have emerged from dormancy and have yet to bloom.
These beautiful pictures were taken when the plants were in bloom in summer and when they showcase their fall foliage.
These Pictures were taken in Fall when the plants were losing their leaves and going dormant for winter. Shipping when dormant is less stressful for the plants.
*WE DO NOT SHIP FULLY MATURE, ADULT PLANTS*
Yes, we have to mention this because, in our experience, people have expected to receive a fully grown 30ft tree.
In Summation:
- If you're plant is pruned, it will be just fine.
- If your plant is small, consider the variety, popularity and rarity.
- If your plant is young, it WILL be well rooted and ready to plant.
- If your plants dropped leaves in the box, it's OK! They all do, no matter if they're in a box for an hour or a week.
- If there is leaf damage, the plant will drop those leaves and regrow lovely new ones within a couple weeks (almost always faster).
- If a branch is broken, your pant will be just fine. In fact it will send out more branches and become thicker than before.
Here at Southern Charm Crape Myrtles, we believe it's extremely important to be 100% transparent as to what you will actually receive. All online nurseries will show you a picture of the mature plant in full bloom.
We want you to know exactly what to expect from opening the box, to planting, to care and growth through it's yearly life cycle.
