Surprised Crape Myrtles Make Excellent Hanging Baskets?
Seeing a weeping crape myrtle growing from a hanging basket certainly isn't the first thing to come to mind when "crape myrtle" pops into your mind. But with the advent of mounding, weeping miniatures, crape myrtles as perennial hanging baskets are an excellent addition to your outdoor oasis.
Things to Consider
There are a few things to consider when choosing the perfect crape myrtle for your hanging basket.
- Would you like long weeping branches, or more of a tight, compact round shape?
- Color? (all personal preference of course!)
- Pot Size?
- Light Exposure?
- Ability to Water?
Size
The mature size of a crape myrtle intended for a hanging basket should be no more than 3ft-4ft. Yes, a 3-4ft plant in a hanging basket would be HUGE. But don't worry, it will be pruned to maintain a smaller size and encourage flowering.
Varieties from our Bijou™ Micro-Mini's or the Miniatures are ideal.

Pot Size
Starting with a 12-14in diameter pot is just fine. The pot material can be natural fiber, wood or plastic. Crape myrtles aren't picky.
*Just make sure it has good drainage. You should be able to see water running out the base of the pot after a thorough watering. *
Use a peat moss and bark based potting soil just like you would if you were plant them in the ground. You can add a light layer of mulch if you're worried about them drying out, but it's not necessary.
As your crape myrtle grows year after year, you may want to consider upsizing the pot, but this isn't required.
Every third year or so remove your plants from their pot, give them a little root trim, replace the soil and repot. You can certainly use the same pot again or choose another one.
This will do two things:
1. Refresh the soil so that new macro and micronutrients are available.
2. Trimming the roots will encourage the plant to put out new feeder roots enabling the plant to absorb the now available nutrients.

Light
Just like their larger cousins, crape myrtles in hanging baskets like lots of sun. So, place your hanging basket where it will receive 6hrs+ of sunlight throughout the day. It can be a combination of morning, afternoon and dappled light.
Also, you will notice that your crape myrtle hanging basket will grow and flower more on the side that receives more sunlight. To remedy this, simply Roate the basket 180 degrees to expose the other side to the sun.

Watering
Place your hanging basket crape myrtle where it will be easy to water. You will need to thoroughly water them 2-3 times a week in the active growing season. If possible, place them where they can also receive rain...
....Additional Tips....
- Fertilizer: Lightly fertilize every 2-3 weeks with a balanced all-purpose fertilizer. See our Fertilization page for more details. Just use less than you would for the same plant in the ground. Start with a small amount and work your way up.
