Bonsai Basics
There are a few things to keep in mind when deciding to grow crape myrtles as bonsai specimens
- Choose a dish that has good drainage. The size of the dish will be relative to the size of the plant (you can always upsize later if you choose). Even in small pots or dishes, crape myrtles love water, but they don't like wet feet so it's very important to give them a chance to drain in between.
- Select a spot that gets around 6hrs of sunlight. Although crape myrtles thrive in full sun, it may be too much for your tiny bonsai. This will result in the plant drying out and wilting. Dappled sunlight throughout the day is fine.
- Use a bonsai growing medium, such as akadama or a bonsai growing mix of your choice. Crape myrtles aren't picky. You can mix akadama with a peat/bark potting soil, use volcanic rock or, yes, even cat litter (plain, preferably not used).
- Thoroughly water your plant and let it dry out in between watering. Depending on weather, dish size, location, etc., this normally equates to every other or every 2nd day. Use your own judgement. Your bonsai will tell you when it's thirsty.
- Train your crape myrtle bonsai as you would any other tree. Get creative with cuts, use wire to easily shape the branches.
- Fertilize lightly every 2-4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer. The key here is "lightly." We don't want to burn the little beauty, and we also don't want it growing too fast. A delicate balance is important, as with any bonsai specimen.
As any bonsai enthusiast will tell you, this description is very basic. But it's more than enough to get you started on your own crape myrtle bonsai journey. So, if you're thinking about starting your first bonsai tree, or you're a seasoned professional looking for a unique specimen, crape myrtles are very forgiving, offer ease of growing and will put on a spectacular summer show.
